Warwick and I spent the day watchin' and reportin'. Here are some pics:

Tthe death of Mark Porter was a shocking event this year at Bathurst. His fellow racers in the Fujitsu race category left the front row of the grid empty as a tribute and many carried tributes to him as shown in this pic.

Matt Mingay and Robbie Bolger were crown pleasers as ever - on bikes and in their respective drift vehicles. Here we see Matt's "signature" spikes on his ute.

The V8 paddock is gettting more and more impressive. Most of the teams have a huge B-double truck kitted out with more equipment and tools than the average suburban car repair centre.

It's hard to understand why the Grand Prix corporation aren't sorry to see the V8s not make an appearance on the grid at the F1 racing weekend next year. It's almost like they don't want fat guys in overcoats there. Why ever not?

The stunt riding lads stand around abusing each other (and me). They almost look like a professional outfit these days. Heaven forbid.

Eventual series champion Rtick Kelly takes advice just beofre heading outin race 2. He was understandable nervous as his series lead was wasting away. He lost more points in race 2 to rival Craig Lowndes- with the two drivers heading into the final race of the year on level pegging. Given that they were both on 3158 points each, it was pretty amazing.

When it comes to this bike, I am so biased. Triumph made the "Nuclear Red" colour for just three years and only one year in this model/body shape. I bought it sight unseen- the dealer said they had one in black and "one of them poofy pink ones in the warehouse". DOWN went the deposit.

That was three years ago. It's been dropped twice- while stationary. Both times by Rachel. Bless her. It has a bellypan that I took off in the second year to "toughen" it up.

It's had 9 new rear tyres and 4 fronts. It's turned 100+ laps of Phillip Island, 30+ laps of Broadford and a couple of unofficial laps of Albert Park. I've geared it down slightly by adding two teeth to the new rear sprocket (at the suggestion of t595.net members).

I just love it. Too much love to sell it. Despite what my Mum says.

Update:
The trumpy is back on the road after some months of neglect. So, keep an eye out for the pink flash. (ohh errr Mrs Slocombe!)

The F1's have a new sponsor in 2007: ING So I popped down to the pitlane at Albert Park for a gander and to report for 3AW.

Tim Bamford from the GP corp did the intros, with Ron Walker making the official announcement, then introducing ING CEO Paul Bedbrook. I had to duck off and do a live cross to Neil Mitchell's show so I missed the part about how many billions of dollars ING are worth. *sigh*

Any hoo, here are the pics.

I was asked last night to MC the season opener for Windsurfing Victoria. it's great to see this once strong organisation getting it's powers back. A turn out of 50 or so turned out to hear some great music, chat about the coming race season, trade war stories and hear me drone on. And on...

My Cousin Cathy King turned 50 last weekend. The party was great and the speeches wonderful. Congrats to Cathy- well done James and kids!!

The drunken stumble to Mum's house (Rchel left earlish) was less impressive. The hangover was 20 kinds of terrible. Thank you James and brothers for that...

Back in the day I used to windsurf every single time it was windy. Winter- no problem. HOWLING gales- perfect. I went on trips to WA, Phillip Island, Merimbula, West Coast, Spain and Morocco. I broke up with more than one girlfriend due to my obsession. I also worked as an instructo and "found" more than one girlfriend. We'll call it even...

I don't sail as often (hmmm... how DID I get to weigh 100kgs?) but I plan to hit the water this summer- a lot. My gear is stored at Elwood Sailing Club and I'm keen as ever.

But yo, let's hit the archives!!!:

When people say "back in the day" I usually reach for my Luger (that's a pistol folks), but: BACK IN THE DAY it used to get crazy windy more often. Witness the above pic: 50 knots of North wind @ Bon Beach Melbourne. September 1993. That's a three square metre sail I'm using. That might mean nothing to you but note the amount of mast poking out the top of the sail. That "extra" mast length is so my regular/average sail 5.3m2 can fit. Thats how small a 3 sq mtr sail is.

Big winds= big airs. My arse is about 5 metres above the top of the waves. The waves are 2-3 metres big. The trough I am heading into (to land as well) means I am at leat 8 metres above the water in this pic. Oh my poor knees.

Elwood- December, 1991. on new board I'd just bought. There was no wind; so damn what thought I. note: long hair.

Pt Ormond- Summer 1992. The board I am riding was a really small custom jobbie. Some guy stole it off my car roof racks and tried to sell it to some other sailors who told me about it oh-too-late.. There were about 4 guys in the country who could ride that toothpick. I never saw it again.

Howling again: Pt Ormond late 90's. Tentative one hand jump. 3.7 sq mtr sail..

If there's one thing I never get bored of: it's looping BIG BIG style. I'm not as sharp as I used to be, though Donny showed a few people up last season with his hell big loops. He's older than me to boot...

John Hopkins of Suzuki in the frantic final minutes of qualifying. Sadly for him Bridgestone inexplicably brought along qualifying tyres totally unsuited to Phillip Island. According to Chris Vermuelen the tyres were "good for two corners..." Appalling! Normally they are good for one warm up lap and a hot lap.

Some pics taken at the F1's in Melbourne. I was working on a few articles at the time.

Aussie Superbike champ Shawn Giles @ the BMW celeb. compound. He went on to win the celeb race and maintain the dignity of Australian bike racers.

Freestyle MotoX legend (trust me, I use legend sparingly!) Carey Hart's BMW 120i having new disc brakes fitted. He toasted the rotors and pads in just a few days.
